The Compression RigHere is a picture of the compression rig from the top: ![]() and here is a picture from the side: ![]() The compression rig consists of two steel plates with holes drilled in the corners. Bolts are put through these holes, and are tightened in order to keep a constant pressure squeezing the gold sheets inside. The steel plates have to be thick enough so that even when they are very hot, they do not bend too much around the gold inside. This is because we want a very even pressure on all parts of the mokume billet, because this will ensure that the bonding is done evenly. I used 1/2" thick plates, and even those started to bend a bit after a few tries.
