Diffusion Bonding - Part I![]()
Atoms in a solid are not fixed, but constantly in motion. They are
constantly vibrating and bumping into each other. In addition, all
solids have a certain number of vacancies, or empty locations
in their crystal structure. Diffusion occurs when these moving atoms
"jump" into a vacancy, and they actually move through the
crystal. When the two sheets of gold are touching, atoms from one will diffuse into the other, and vice versa. This is called interdiffusion, and it is what causes a diffusion bond to form. In the picture above, atoms in the yellow gold are moving into the red gold, and atoms from the red gold are moving into the yellow gold.
