Setting Up the Compression Rig![]() Next I prepared the compression rig for heating. After cleaning it, I painted the two inner sides with Liquid Paper (White-Out), which makes an excellent non-stick surface for keeping the gold and the steel separate. This helps the mokume billet not to stick to the compression rig, and keeps things cleaner throughout.
I believe this is because most forms of White-Out contain a large amont
of titanium dioxide (TiO2) - a very white ceramic powder that
is used to whiten many things, from paint to food to White-Out. It is
completely harmless, and does not bond with any metals. Once you paint
the White-Out on the rig, let it dry. The crumbly powder left is mostly
titanium dioxide.
