    Stacking the Layers of Gold

I then stacked the layers of white, yellow and red gold in the order that I wished:

and very quickly realized that I was getting fingerprints on them:

Fingerprints, along with ANY dirt, oil or contamination must be completely removed before stacking your metals and any other steps. I did this by washing the layers in acetone, to remove any organic matter (such as oil from my fingerprints), and then in ethanol, to remove any junk left over from the acetone.

Make sure to wear gloves starting now. They will save you tons of time and headaches later, because they help you keep your mokume billet much cleaner. Also, make sure you only place your metals on clean surfaces, like fresh plastic bags, and that you use a non-scratching, lint-free cloth to clean them, like Kimwipes. Using a paper towel could leave threads behind, which can turn into flaws in your mokume billet.

This is what the metals looked like after a thorough cleaning. Your metal should be at least this clean before stacking it up.
