Loading the Rig for Heat Treatment![]() Then, I filled the bag up about 1/5th of the way with charcoal and put the compression rig inside the bag: ![]() Any size charcoal is fine, but larger pieces will make cleanup easier and reduce the amount of dust created: ![]() Then I filled the bag to about 4/5 of the way up with charcoal, making sure to distribute it evenly on all sides of the compression rig. I left enough space at the top of the bag to close it: ![]()
The reason that I filled the bag with charcoal is to provide a
reducing atmosphere, or an environment very low in oxygen. This
is because oxides formed on the metal surface also prevent a diffusion
bond from forming, and the best way to prevent forming oxides is to
remove all the oxygen.Charcoal does this by combining with oxygen at high temperatures to form carbon dioxide (CO2), an inert gas. The charcoal in the bag very quickly consumes all the available oxygen, keeping all the metal surfaces clean and oxide free.
