    Grinding

The faces of the billet are now ground to remove all the oxide and the White-Out. This must be done until the faces are smooth:

This grinding was done with 320 grit SiC (corundum) sandpaper, to avoid losing too much material

In addition, the sides MUST be ground absolutely smooth. Any layer overhang must be ground down, and the sides should be ground down until there are no lines visible between layers:

It is especially important to grind the sides down absolutely smooth. This is because any cracks on the sides, no matter how small, act as stress concentrators in a material. When a material undergoes a certain amount of stress (such as during rolling), any cracks, holes and voids have local stresses that are much higher, and are often the sites of failure. For example, the best way to break a piece of glass or metal is to scratch it, and try to bend it at the scratch. It will usually fail at that scratch, because the scratch is a stress concentrator.

The finer the crack tip, the more of a stress concentrator it is. Cracks between layers, even at the edges, can (and did!) cause failures between layers in mokume billets.
