    Rolling I

    The next step is to roll the billet. This both thins it out and makes it longer in the direction(s) of rolling. A rolling mill is used for this operation. Rolling mills can either be hand-powered or electrically-driven. Here is one of MIT's rolling mills in the forge:


    The billet is fed through the 'rolls,' or the round cylinders, and the cranks are turned to force it through and squish it in one direction. Upon closer inspection this rolling mill was found to be unsuitable:


    Because the rolls are uneven, the billet would come out lopsided and curved to the side. A second rolling mill was therefore found and used instead:
