    Preparing to Cut

    Before cutting, the blade is lubricated with cutting wax:


    This is done for a few reasons:
  • It allows the saw to cut easier
  • It reduces the heat made during cutting from friction
  • It lets the blade glide easier, reducing the chance that it will break
  • It reduces the force needed to cut the billet, making it go faster

    The billet is inserted into a vice with enough room for the saw to cut:


    The billet is secured in the vice very tightly between two sheets of cardboard:


    This is because gold is very soft, and almost all metals can scratch or dent gold. Cardboard is softer, so it makes a good cushion to prevent the gold from being dented by the vice, while still holding it tight.
