Trimming the Ends![]() I then began the process of trimming the ends off the billet. Because I planned on increasing the amount of layers, it would have to be heated and rolled again. Rolling the first time squished the layers, producing some more cracks in between layers on the outside. These have to be removed before proceeding. It also made the billet rounded (not square), and the billet would have to be square before it went in the furnace again. Rather than grind away the billet, I chose to cut the ends in order to save the scraps. This allowed me to save both the pieces I cut off AND the gold dust generated during cutting: ![]()
