    Doubling Layers - Sectioning

    Satisfied that there were no cracks in the billet, I then measured the thickness of the billet with calipers, and set the calipers to half that distance. With the caliper position locked in place, I placed one jaw at the edge and scratched a line down the middle with the other caliper jaw:


    This gave an excellent scribe line to show me where to cut. You could make the cut with the jeweler's saw just fine, but I had some more sophisticated equipment available to me - a low speed VariCut diamond saw:


    The VariCut saw uses a very thin Buehler IsoCut blade, which is a bronze blade with tiny industrial diamonds lodged in the outside of the saw:


    I clamped the billet in the saw, lined up the blade, and secured it in place with the cardboard and built-in clamp. I then lowered the sample onto the saw and let it take over:


    The saw works quickly, and after five minutes the cut was almost done:


    At this point I removed the piece from the saw:


    and finished the cut with the jeweler's saw. I then had two nearly identical pieces of mokume:
