    Diffusion Bond Fail!!!

    ... and it split in two!!! Cracking noises were heard during rolling, and the two pieces completely separated. Looking at the two failed faces, it was clear why the failure occurred:


    Clearly one edge of the billet didn't bond as well as the other. The problem was traced to the compression rig. It had been used a number of times in the past, and by placing it of a flat surface, I saw that the plates weren't perfectly flat anymore! Therefore in order to attempt a bond again, I would have to both:
  • Reflatten the mokume billets
  • Reflatten the plates of the compression rig
