    Straightening the Compression Rig

    In order to straighten the compression rig, I simply removed material from both sides of both plates until they were flat. To do this I used the same milling machine, except this time it was how it was intended to be used:


    This milling machine is equipped with an automatic table (seen on the right) that allows the table to move left and right at a constant speed, without the user pushing it. I simply put an end-mill in the machine, set it to the correct height, applied plenty of cutting fluid throughout and let the table go. Each time it would remove a couple hundredths of an inch of material thick in a straight line:


    This process was continued down the plate. After about ten passes, the entire plate had been smoothed:


    This procedure was repeated for both sides of both plates. After that, the mokume billets were loaded into the compression rig in the same manner as last time, except that now everything was flat and applied even pressure. After diffusion bonding for two hours the setup was extracted, cooled and inspected...
