Setting Up for Soldering - Flux and Baking Soda![]() The flux is the glowing green liquid on the left. Upon drying, it leaves crystals that melt easily under the heat of the torch. These crystals dissolve any oxides on the metal surface and prevent the formation of new ones, ensuring that the solder will join clean surfaces of metal. The liquid on the right is just a solution of baking soda and water. I use that to neutralize the acid in the pickle once the billets are done pickling, because you don't want to let acid keep eating away at any cracks in the piece! Finally I wedged the billet between two pieces of firebrick and applied a generous helping of flux, which would protect the surface once the flames hit it. ![]()
