    After Soldering - Cleaning Up

    Sloppiness aside, this shows what the billet should look like after you are finished soldering:


    Notice how the solder has flowed well over the whole top face of the billet, ensuring that the entire crack is filled.

    The billet was then flipped over to reveal the other side, refluxed and the soldering process repeated to fill in the other side. After that, the billet was dropped hot into the pickling bath. This quenched the billet, or cooled it very rapidly, to freeze the grain structure as very small crystals. A fine grained structure is desireable at this point. Fine grains will make it easier to work with mechanically.

    The billet was left in the pickle for 20 minutes at 75°C.
