Figuring Out What To Do Next

Now that I had a clean billet, it was time to do some measuring. My billet is still too thick for rings, and still too short to wrap around my finger. So I measured the diameter of my finger:

My finger has a diameter of about 17.3mm, so the inside of the ring would have to be about 54.4mm in circumference. Therefore, the whole billet would have to be a little longer than that, since the outside of the ring will have a larger circumference than the inside.

It was time to use a serious rolling mill. I didn't want unevenness of the rolls or lack of strength to have any factors here, so I used our lab's 10 ton hydraulic monster mill:

Notice how the "Emergency Stop" bar is located at about forehead level. The idea is that if you accidentally get your hands caught, there is absolutely no way for you to remove them. So you have to bash the Emergency Stop bar with your head in the case that both your hands are being crushed! Here's another view at the exit:

To avoid crushing my limbs, I used a "push stick," or a piece of wood to push the billet into the rolls instead of guiding it in by hand:

You should do this too if you value your arms in the slightest. Make sure the push stick is bigger than the gap between the rolls to avoid getting the push stick caught. Then again, if it does get caught, it will just be crushed. Nothing can stop this awesome machine!
