Grinding and Beveling

Next the ring blanks were ground on the polishing wheel until they were at the dimensions we wanted. This just took time - I would grind for a few seconds, measure with the calipers, and repeat until everything was the right dimensons, even and smooth.

The final thing to do on the polisher was to bevel the edges of the ring blanks at 45 degree angles:

This was to ensure that once the ends were brought together, they would meet with more surface area in contact. This would make for a much stronger bond once the ring was soldered together. This shows the importance of planning the entire project ahead of time, so that you know when to perform what step in anticipation of another step.
