    Curving the Ring Blanks

    To start the curving process, the blanks were put into the vice with about 20% of the length sticking out. I then hammered that little end over to roughly the radius that I wanted to get the curve started. Once that was done, I gradually exposed more of the ring blanks in the vice and tapped on them with the hammer to continue the curve.


    Luckily materials science works in your favor here. The bent parts will "work harden," meaning that the unbent areas will bend the easiest. This helps you to make the curvature more even.

    This process of exposing and curving works about 75% of the way down the billets:


    Note that you can already see the layers in the side of the billet. This should be encouraging!

    For the last bit, you will have to continue curving over a special tool called a mandrel.
