Shaping - A Preview of the Pattern

After a final anneal and quench to normalize the grain structure after the stress test, I finally began shaping the ring. I started by filing off any rough edges. Next I used the polishing wheel to grind the sides smooth and parallel with 320 grit paper, and then ground the outside down starting with 180 grit, then 320 grit SiC paper to make a round ring. This is what I saw:

This is a good preview of the pattern to come. Notice the waviness from uneven layers - this is what was actually desired. I wanted whatever imperfections that happened during the process to come out as the pattern in the rings.

However, I still wanted a bit more variety to the pattern. I also had to stretch the rings by about one full size. Luckily more hammering on the mandrel could accomplish both of these!
