Texturing and Sizing at the Same Time

I set the ring on the mandrel in a vice, and then used a cross peen hammer to stretch the ring in the circumferential direction. This also led to distortions of the layers. I tried my best to make the hammer blows the same depth and spacing from each other.

As soon as the ring stretched by about 1/8 of a size I would switch sides - i.e. flip the ring around and continue hammering so as not to make it a conic section instead of a round ring. After each 1/4 size I would anneal and quench the ring to make it soft again. You can really feel the difference when hammering a soft ring versus a work-hardened one!

After hammering the rings to the correct sizes, this is what they looked like:

Once the stretching was done, here is what the rings looked like together:

Finally, with the rings at the correct sizes and patterns, it was time for the final shaping.
