Home-Made Crystals!

These are the crystals of various materials that I've managed to grow on my own.  This includes crystals grown from binary salts via the evaporation and supercooling methods, bismuth crystals grown by supercooling the liquid metal, and iodine crystals grown very slowly from a vapor.

KCl Symmetry Crystal

This crystal was grown by suspending a seed crystal in a supersaturated solution of potassium chloride (KCl) for two weeks.  The solution was changed and filtered every day except weekends to prevent other crystals from detracting from this one.  The result was stunning - this crystal is nearly a centimeter long from tip to tip, and exhibits elements of 2-fold, 3-fold and 4-fold symmetry.
KCl Palacial Crystal Cluster

This large KCl crystal cluster was grown over a period of almost a month by the evaporation method, where a temperature-controlled, saturated solution of KCl is allowed to evaporate very slowly.  Rough temperature control was achieved by encasing it in insulating foam - nothing more.  This crystal cluster will likely be coated in gold to highlight its features.  In the meantime, here are pictures of the cluster itself.
Huge CuSO4 Trapezoidal Crystal

This crystal of copper (II) sulfate (CuSO4) was grown by the evaporation method over a period of three weeks.  A small seed crystal was put on the bottom of the beaker.  The seed crystals were grown by letting a solution evaporate and then singling out one well-faceted, but tiny crystal.  I was considering making this into a pendant, but then I was reminded that CuSO4 is both toxic and water-soluble.  Oh well.  Looks good though!
Large CuSO4 Trapezoidal Crystal

This crystal of CuSO4 was grown just like the one above, only I waited ten days instead of three weeks.  The result was quite similar, but about half as large and a little bit rougher for some reason.
KCrO3 Cluster of Crystals

This cluster of Potassium Chromate (KCrO3) was just allowed to evaporate until most of the liquid was gone.  The crystal mass was then dried.  This will become the basis for seed crystals for growing larger crystals of the same material.
