Hydrogen is the lightest element, making up the fuel that powers both stars and fusion reactors. This sample, deuterium, is a stable isotope of hydrogen that contains one neutron and one proton. When it combines with oxygen, it forms D2O (instead of H2O), which is known as "heavy water" because it weighs 11% more than normal water.
