The first rare earth element, lanthanum must be kept under oil. Even so, this lanthanum has oxidized underneath the oil, which is visible as a white oxide that easily separates from its parent metal. Lanthanum is used in the form of lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) as electron microscopy filaments for high resolution work.
