Sodium (from the latin "natrium") must be stored under mineral oil or something inert, or it will oxidize in air, forming heat and hydrogen gas. Liquid sodium has been successfully tested as a coolant for nuclear reactors, such as EBR-II at Idaho National Laboratory.
