Tin, or stannum, forms 'twins' as it deforms rather than allowing dislocation slip. The formation of these 'twins,' or low-angle grain boundaries, creates shockwaves that travel through the metal at the speed of sound. Tin therefore crackles as it is deformed, a phenomenon known as 'tin cry.'
