Tantalum

My advisor often refers to Tantalum as "Impervium," because it can resist just about every form of corrosion. It is often used as a last resort for corrosion resistance, because it is very expensive. A four foot, 1/4" OD scrap tube for my project cost over $500!

Single Crystal of Tantalum

Purity:  99.9999%

This Tantalum sample, from the looks of things, was used to deduce its magnetic properties. A perfect disc of this single crystal was cut most likely to perfectly determine its mass and dimensions, or perhaps to fit in the sample holder. Luckily both pieces are still here.

No guesses as to why the Ta powder was there. Perhaps it was to be melted into other alloys.
